In this hands-on, two-week course, Rick Shelley will demonstrate the methods of mosaic production. Students will learn to shape stone, glass, and ceramic into tesserae to be used in three mosaic projects. Roman mosaics, medieval mosaics, and contemporary mosaics will be studied for inspiration. The course combines intensive instruction with weekend excursions to the mosaic treasures in Florence and Ravenna. The goal is to enjoy and create beautiful mosaics.
“Mosaics are a rich medium involving touch, texture, color, pattern, and the play of light. They are made with the most durable materials and can last centuries. Every tiny mosaic piece is chosen, shaped, and positioned to support a larger vision. I enjoy the choice and variety of materials: glass, marble, river stones, ceramic, shell—even gems, ivory, and gold. A mosaic can be plain or opulent, the subject can be abstract or naturalistic, the style can be ancient or modern. I delight in the infinite possibilities."
The International Center for the Arts (ICA) is a complex of historic buildings within the walls of Monte Castello di Vibio, an ancient hilltop town in central Italy. Safe and friendly accommodations along with a mild climate, spectacular views, and traditional meals offer participants a rich, artistic experience.
